Messman belongs to the Catering Department and usually assists Chief Cook of the vessel in preparation and serving of the food. Messman’s duties also include cleaning of galleys and mess room; waiting on the crew during meals, keeping the store room in order and assistance to the Chief Steward if there is one in a line up.
As for the wage rate, it varies slightly from dry cargo to oil carries. Messman on Bulk Carrier will earn USD 1000 - USD 1200 per month. Container ships, Heavy Lifts and Reefers promise the same amount of money while General Cargo vessels make a lower start of USD 900 per month.
Offshore and tanker vessels offer higher wages of USD 1200 - USD 1300 on oil and gas carriers; meanwhile rates reach USD 1600 on offshore vessels such as Pipe layers or AHTS.
