Therefore, Chief Cook prepares delicious and nutritious food for the crew, orders supplies for the vessel and manages junior gallay staff usually consisting of 2nd Cook and/or Messboy. Upkeep of proper hygiene standards in galley and stores also is a Chief Cook’s responsibility unless there is a Chief Steward onboard.

As for the salary rate, it may vary dramatically. Chief Cook on dry cargo vessels will get from USD 1 600 to USD 2 200 depending on the size of the vessel and experience in rank. There is a slight increase to USD 2 000 - USD 2 300 on tanker and offshore vessels.
