2nd Officer performs
duties of the main navigator on a vessel. He/she plans a passage, steers the
vessel, monitors navigational equipment and keeps the ship's logbooks (Bridge
Log Book, Garbage Log Book, Ballast Log, etc.).
Along with a Chief
Mate, the 2nd Officer is also responsible for vessel’s cargo operations,
mooring and briefing junior bridge officers.
Salary of the 2nd
Officer varies a bit (from USD 3 200 to
USD 3 500) on Bulk carriers and Container ships. The same amount is paid on
Heavy-Lifts, Reefers and Passenger vessels. Meanwhile, on General Cargo and
similar vessels salaries start from USD
2nd Officer’s salary
on a small Oil Products Tanker does not differ a lot from a Bulk Carrier - USD 3 300 per month. However, on a
large Crude Oil Tanker or Gas carrier the salary for this position will be
around USD 4 500.
You will need a DP operator’s certificate for
this position in offshore as well. Salaries here range from USD 120 per day on AHT or Research
vessel (non-DP), and go up to USD
180-200 per day on PSV or AHTS DP2.
