The 3rd Officer is a
junior member of the Bridge crew. He or she is a valuable assistant to other
Deck officers, so duties of the 3rd Officer are varied and quite important:

be familiar with a passage plan and details of the voyage.

be made on Passenger ships or RO-ROs. A start of the career will probably be
made on General cargo vessels where the 3rd Officer earns around USD 2 000.
Join the tanker fleet
as early in your career as you manage. Even for this junior officer position
there are significant salary differences. Wage rates start from USD 3 000 for Oil Products tankers, and
will vary from USD 3 000 to USD 5 000
for Crude Oil Carriers, LPG/LNG Carriers and Chemical tankers depending on the
size of the vessel and other conditions of the voyage.
The 3rd Officer is not a popular position in the
offshore fleet. There are few vessels that require such extended bridge crew.
However, wage rates are quite pleasant there. They start from USD 110 per day and go up to USD 150 per day.
