The 4th Engineer is a
Junior officer among the Engine crew. He usually reports to the 2nd Engineer and takes over the team of oilers. Officer in this rank stands a watch;
and is in charge of purifier, compressor; fuel, diesel, lube and cylinder oils
and other auxiliary machinery.
The 4th Engineer also
keeps records of sludge and bilge on board, ensures compliance with MARPOL and
company environmental policies under the Chief Engineer’s supervision, together
with the 3rd Engineer maintains
lifeboats in proper operational condition. This
engine officer is trained to repair any mechanism onboard whether heating,
ventilation, air-conditioning system or shipboard electronics.
As for the wage scale,
the 4th Engineer on Bulk carriers can expect around USD 2 700 - 2 900. The same amount will be paid on Container ships
and Heavy-Lifts. Salary of the Junior Engineer on the General cargo ships will
be about USD 2 500; while RO-RO
shipowners are prepared to pay more - USD
2 800 - USD 3 000.
Tanker fleet promises
the highest wages for this rank. The 4th Engineer on Oil Products Tanker is
paid USD 2 800 - USD 3 500; Crude
Oil Carriers offer the rate of USD 3020
- USD 3 200 while the rate on
LPG/LNG tankers reach USD 3 700 - 3 800
and Chemical tankers top the bill with USD
3500 - USD 4000 per month.
