The 3rd Engineer is a
valuable member of the Engine Crew. He operates machines, maintains and
overhauls machines and mechanisms in ER and all over the vessel.
His responsibilities stretch to:
Watch keeping in the Engine Room together with
other members of the Engine crew ensuring safe and efficient performance
of the main engine, generators,
and other machinery;
Operating ballast system and providing regular
maintenance to it;
Keeps daily log on engineering works onboard;
Performs routine repair of any onboard

The 3rd Engineers are
in demand on commercial vessels. Onboard the Bulk Carrier or Container ship
he’ll be paid about USD 3200 to USD 3500.
The range is considerably wider onboard Heavy-Lifts, Multi- Purpose, RO-RO and
Passenger ships. Salary rates for the 3rd Engineer are from USD 2 600 to USD 3 500 there.
Meanwhile, there is a
traditional lapse in wage rates even on merchant fleet vessels; so the same
position on General cargo ships is paid around USD 1600.
The situation is
