Duties

The 3rd Engineer keeps an engine room watch and helps ensure the safe and efficient operation of the main engine, generators and auxiliary machinery. The job often includes work with pumps, compressors, purifiers, boilers, ballast systems and other equipment that needs regular attention during the voyage.

On many ships, the 3rd Engineer also carries out planned maintenance, records engineering work in logbooks, helps with repairs and prepares equipment for inspections, audits and port state control. Depending on the crew structure, the role may also include working closely with the 4th Engineer and motormen on routine engine room jobs.

Some fleets expect extra background. Tanker companies may ask for the right tanker endorsements. Reefer ships may want experience with refrigeration systems. Offshore employers can also look for DP (dynamic positioning) experience or other vessel-specific technical background, depending on the project and the ship.

Requirements

A 3rd Engineer vacancy usually requires a valid engineering Certificate of Competency in line with STCW III/1, the national CoC required by the flag or company, and previous sea service as a junior engine officer.
