The main duty of the
2nd Engineer is to keep a watch in his Engine Room ensuring its efficient and
faultless operation. Together with Chief Engineer, the 2nd Engineer is
responsible for the supply of spares and
consumables; he/she conduct diagnostics of vessel’s equipment and assigns tasks
for maintenance and repair, keeps ER log-books.
vessels types require 2nd Engineer to perform other multiple duties. For
example, experience in refrigeration units’ repair is a must on Reefers while
DP maintenance certificate will be asked to join an offshore vessel.
Salaries of 2nd
Engineer start from USD 3 800 - USD 4 500 for General Cargo vessels and
Coasters. On Container ships they earn from USD 6 300 to USD 6 500; a little
more - USD 6 500 - USD 6 800 on Bulk Carriers.
At the same time, on a
Multi-Purpose vessels or Heavy-Lifts, the 2nd Engineer’s salary slightly lower
(USD 5 700 - USD 6 000).
Wages of 2nd Engineer
on tanker fleet start at a rate of USD 7 500 on Oil Products Tankers, raise to
USD 9 300 on Chemical Tankers and top at USD 9800 and more on VLCC and gas
There are quite
different wage rates in offshore industry for the 2nd Engineer position. Those
working on small PSVs, Crew Boats, AHT, etc. will earn USD 100 - 150 per day; PSVs and AHTS with DP provide USD 200 -
250 per day. Meanwhile, more complicated vessels will offer USD 300 and more.
