Boatswain or Bosun is
a promoted AB Seaman. He/she is in
charge of the deck ratings and his competence revolves around maintenance deck
and hull in proper condition as well as the equipment installed there.
tasks and supervises the work of the deck crew. He/she ensures that the deck
area and hull are scrubbed, painted and free of corrosion. Mooring and
anchoring operations are controlled by Boatswain as well and the progress is
reported to the Chief Officer.
In addition, this
crewmember takes care of firefighting equipment onboard and ensures fire
fighting capabilities of his deck crew.
Boatswain on Bulk
Carriers and Container ships is paid from
USD 1 500 to USD 1 700 per month. The same amount is offered on Ferries and
Heavy-Lift vessels while on Reefers and RO-RO Carriers Bosuns enjoy the salary
of USD 1 800 and more.
On General Cargo ships
there will be a downshift to USD 1 200
per month; the same goes for the most Passenger vessels and Multi purpose
The tanker fleet
presents a variety of opportunities. Bosuns are in demand for Bunkering vessels
where they are offered around USD 2 000
per month. Boatswain on other tanker vessels is paid from USD 1 800 to USD 2 200 depending on the size of the vessel and
details of the voyage.
Offshore sector doesn’t promise exorbitant rates
for this position. Boatswain on AHTS vessel is paid around USD 1 500 per month; the salary of USD 1 200 is offered on AHT, tug, Seismic vessels. However,
sophisticated offshore vessels (MRSV, OCV, Well Stimulation) might require
Bosun with some additional qualifications; and the salary will be corresponding.
