AB Seaman is an
experienced deck rating. His extensive list of duties may include:
Maintenance and upkeep i.e. cleansing,
painting, sanitation, chipping etc. of all structures and machinery on deck;
Operation of deck equipment such as winches,
cranes, cargo and mooring systems;
Steering the vessel during a bridge
watchkeeping if in possession the required CoC;
Keeping a gangway or anchor watches;
Maintenance of a life-saving equipment onboard
under Boatswain’s supervision.
The wage rate for this
rank may vary considerably from USD 650
for a start in position (any merchant vessel) to USD 2 500 at a Drilling Platform. However, an average salary rate
for AB Seaman is around USD 1200 - USD
1600 for Bulks Carriers, Container ships and Heavy-Lifts depending on the
dimensions of the vessel.
General cargo vessels
offer smaller salaries of USD 1000 - USD
1 300, but less trouble with additional deck equipment. The same amount is
paid on Passenger vessels; while salaries on RO-RO are much higher (USD 1 400 - USD 1 700).
There is an unusual
unanimity in salary for AB Seaman on different types of tankers. Wage rate is from USD 1 400 to USD 1 600 on all oil,
chemical and gas carriers. The same amount is paid on Bunkering vessels; and
this position is particularly popular there.
AB Seaman can make
some good money in the offshore sector as well. Rates start from USD 1 100 at unsophisticated AHT, PSV
or AHTS vessels and reach USD 1 600 -
USD 1800 for Pipe-laying or Seismic vessels where considerate and expert
handling of onboard equipment is a must.
