OS or an Ordinary
Seaman is a junior member of a deck ratings’ crew. Ordinary Seaman works
his/her way up towards the AB Seaman and Boatswain’s ranks, so must gain
sufficient experience and time in position.
responsibilities of an Ordinary Seaman include:
Performing routine maintenance of the deck area
and hull i.e cleaning, removing rust accumulations, scrubbing, painting, etc.
Handling ropes, chains and wires on the deck
Assistance during berthing and anchoring
Securing and checking the fastenings of cargo
Upkeep of the emergency and life-saving
Launch and recovery of boats.
As for the wage rates,
offshore ships such as AHTS, MRSV, Well Stimulation and so on offer the most attractive rates in the
industry (around USD 1 200 - 1 400
per month) unsurprisingly.
Next to them go tanker
vessels. For instance, OS at LPG/LNG tankers will get about USD 1300 per month while the salary
rates on Chemical and Oil Products Tankers may vary from USD 1100 to USD 1 300 as well.
Merchant fleet offers
a bit modester wages. Ordinary Seaman on Bulk Carrier or Container Ship can
expect around USD 900 - 1000 a
month; and even less, about USD 700 -
USD 1000 at General Cargo ship.
On the other hand,
RO-RO and Heavy-Lift vessels offer nice wage rates of USD 1 100 - USD 1 400 due to
a heavy deck work expected onboard these ships.
