Position of a Deck Cadet is an essential step towards becoming a navigational officer. Usually these crewmembers are the students of maritime universities who are obliged to acquire some necessary seatime practice.

Deck Cadets perform various duties during their apprenticeship:

• Ship handling and navigation under the competent supervision of Senior Deck Officers;
• Assistance to Navigational Officers;
• Performing numerous tasks concerning cargo operations, safety and security on the vessel.

Deck Cadet is one the junior positions onboard; therefore, the wage rate for this rank is comparatively low. Deck Cadets on Bulk Carriers, Container Ships, General Cargo, Multi-Purpose and other Dry Cargo vessels will earn from USD 350 to USD 500.
