Oiler

Oiler is a junior engine-room rating responsible for lubrication, routine support work and basic machinery care on board. In most cases, the Oiler works as part of the Engine crew and helps keep moving parts of the vessel’s machinery properly lubricated and in working condition. In practice, this is one of the core junior positions for seafarers building experience in the engine department.

Oiler Salary Expectations

Oiler salary today depends mainly on vessel type, company, contract terms and previous engine-room experience. The average Oiler salary on Maritime Zone is around USD 2,056/month. While simpler entry-level contracts on smaller vessels can still start from around USD 1,200, most contracts today tend to fall closer to the USD 1,800 - 2,300 per month range, with stronger tanker, gas and specialized contracts moving higher. For a broader overview, see the Oiler salary statistics page.

Duties

The Oiler is responsible for oiling and greasing moving parts of shipboard machinery and helping maintain the engine room in proper working condition. This usually includes filling oil cups with lubricating oil, checking lubrication points, keeping related records, and helping make sure machinery is properly serviced during routine operation.

The job also includes greasing deck mechanisms and emergency equipment where required, assisting the 3rd Engineer and other engineers during maintenance and repair of ship engine parts, and helping with blowers, compressors, motors, gears and similar machinery. On many vessels, the Oiler also supports general engine-room routine, cleanliness and practical repair work under the supervision of senior engine staff.

Although this is a junior engine rating position, the role is important for daily technical operation on board. A careful and reliable Oiler helps reduce wear, supports safe machinery performance and gives the engine team practical support during both routine work and maintenance periods.

Requirements

An Oiler vacancy usually requires valid seafarer documents, STCW Basic Safety Training (BST), a valid medical fitness certificate and, on many vessels, STCW III/4 certification for engine-room ratings forming part of an engineering watch. Previous sea service is often preferred, but strong practical motivation, technical background and readiness for engine-room work can also matter, especially for junior contracts.

Depending on vessel type, employers may also prefer candidates with previous engine-room experience, tanker familiarity, basic repair skills or experience assisting engineers during maintenance.

If you are looking for the best Oiler vacancies, compare not only salary, but also vessel type, contract length, engine-room workload, promotion potential and the reputation of the company. A good Oiler contract can be an important step toward positions such as Fitter, Motorman or junior engine officer roles later on.
