Vacancies for Gas Engineer

Gas Engineer

Gas Engineer (Cargo Engineer on some LNG and LPG carriers, gas engineer) is a marine engineer who specializes in cargo systems on LNG carriers and LPG carriers. This position is connected with the operation of equipment used for loading, storage, monitoring and discharge of liquefied gas.

Gas Engineer is not always a separate rank in the standard engine department hierarchy. It is more often a narrow technical specialization on the gas carrier fleet. Companies usually consider experienced marine engineers with tanker or gas carrier background, additional training and certificates for work on liquefied gas tankers.

Typical offers for Gas Engineer jobs in 2026 are in the range of USD 5,500-11,000 per month, depending on the type of gas carrier, vessel size, cargo system complexity and company requirements. Salaries on large LNG carriers are usually higher than on LPG and smaller gas carriers. Below you can find current vacancies and a short overview of the position, duties, requirements and salary expectations.

Gas Engineer duties

On a gas carrier, the Gas Engineer is responsible for the technical condition and safe operation of cargo equipment. Common duties include:

Operation and maintenance of cargo compressors, pumps, heat exchangers, vaporizers and gas reliquefaction systems;

Monitoring cargo parameters: temperature, pressure, tank levels and boil-off gas (BOG) condition;

Assisting with cargo operations: loading, discharge, cooling down, inerting, purging and preparation of tanks and pipelines;

Maintenance of cryogenic equipment, valves, fittings and low-temperature insulation systems on LNG carriers;

Monitoring cargo area safety systems: gas detection equipment, ESD (Emergency Shutdown), emergency ventilation and firefighting systems;

Coordination with the cargo officer, Chief Engineer and other officers during preparation for cargo operations;

Maintaining technical documentation, maintenance records, cargo operation records and reports on equipment condition.

To work as a Gas Engineer, candidates usually need a marine engineer certificate, engine department experience on tankers or gas carriers, STCW V/1-2 Advanced Training for Liquefied Gas Tanker Cargo Operations, basic STCW training, a valid medical certificate and seafarer's documents. Some companies also require previous LNG or LPG experience, knowledge of reliquefaction systems, experience with cargo compressors and additional training according to the shipowner's requirements.

IGF Code training may be required if the vessel uses gas fuel or if the position is connected not only with cargo systems, but also with gas fuel systems. For regular cargo work on gas carriers, the key certificate remains the liquefied gas tanker cargo operations certificate.

Contracts on gas carriers often last 3-4 months, but conditions depend on the company, trading area, vessel type and crew position.

Gas Engineer salary by gas carrier type

The gas carrier segment is considered one of the highest-paid areas of the merchant fleet. On Maritime Zone, the most common salary ranges are:

Large LNG carriers: USD 9,000-11,000 per month. The highest salaries are connected with complex cryogenic equipment, cargo containment systems and higher crew training requirements;

LPG carriers, including VLGC: USD 7,500-9,500. A large and stable segment with regular demand for cargo system specialists;

Mid-size LPG and ethylene carriers: USD 6,500-8,500. A good option for specialists moving into the gas carrier segment after tanker experience;

Small gas carriers and coastal vessels: USD 5,500-7,000. These jobs often have shorter contracts and more flexible requirements for previous experience;

LNG bunkering and vessels with gas fuel systems: a growing segment where LNG handling, IGF Code and gas fuel system knowledge may be required.

Demand for Gas Engineers is supported by the growth of the LNG fleet, development of LPG transportation and wider use of gas fuel in merchant shipping. Many of these vacancies are filled through direct recruitment and trusted crewing companies, so it is worth checking this page regularly and keeping gas-related certificates up to date.
